The Property
TOWNHOUSE LA FUGA. This 400-year old townhouse has recently been totally renovated. It is situated in one of the quiet, cobbled streets in the old part of Vejer, just a few minutes walk from the Plaza d'Espana. The house has maintained many original features and is very comfortable. The fully equipped wooden kitchen has granite worktops, electric oven/hob, fridge, coffee percolator, toaster etc. The lounge has French windows with fantastic views over the surrounding countryside towards Morocco and on a clear night you can see the twinkling lights of Tangier. Outside, there is a beautiful patio with bougainvillea and flowering plants. The house has been furnished in Moroccon style and duvets, bedlinen and towels are included in the rental price, as is electricity and a clean at the end of your stay. Free parking is available very close by. Shops, a daily market and bars and restaurants are all within easy walking distance of the house.
A beautiful beach is just 10 minutes away by car. Vejer is a white, Moorish hilltop town perched high above the steep gorge of the river Barbate. It is a magical place to explore with its brilliant white cobbled alleyways, iron-grilled windows, balconies and patios and dozens of small tapas bars and restaurants. There is a magnificent castle and beautiful church. The town square, which is situated just a few minutes walk from the property, has a wonderful old fountain with traditional ceramic Andalucian frogs, which spout water high into the air. There is a daily fruit/veg/meat/fish market. The beaches along this coast are amongst the best in Europe - huge stretches of golden sand that are - weekends aside - virtually deserted. The coast is dotted with small towns with bars and fish restaurants, from where you can watch the wind-and kitesurfers. The stunning mountains of the Alcornocales Nat.Park are a short drive away and there is golf & horseriding nearby. Or take a day trip to Seville, Medina Sidonia, Gibraltar or even Morocco.

*** Vejer de la Frontera is a classic, white, Moorish hilltop town perched high above the steep gorge of the river Barbate. It is a magical place to explore, with its brilliant white cobbled alleyways, iron-grilled windows, balconies and patios with terracotta pots filled with flowers and dozens of small tapas bars and restaurants. The town square, which is situated just a few minutes walk from the house, has a wonderful old fountain with traditional ceramic Andalucian frogs, which spout water high into the air. There is a daily fruit/veg, meat and fish market and there are several small bakeries and grocery shops, as well as a good sized supermarket in the new part of town.
This is a part of Spain where mass tourism is unknown, the pace of life is very slow and everything is very Spanish - Lunch goes on forever! Very few locals speak English. The beaches along this coast are amongst the best in Europe - huge stretches of golden sand that are - weekends aside - virtually deserted. The nearest beach is 10 minutes away by car. The coast is dotted with little towns with bars and fish restaurants, from where you can watch the wind- and kitesurfers. Windsurfing equipment can be rented from Club Mistral windsurfing centre near Tarifa.
The stunning mountains of the Alcornocales Nature Park can be explored on foot or by bicycle and a local company organises guided trips into the mountains, as well as kayaking. (Details on request). The Parque Naturel de Donana, north of Cadiz, is one of Europe’s best known bird watching areas. Towns such as Medina Sidonia, Cadiz, Jerez, Tarifa, Sevilla and Gibraltar are well worth a visit. There is a regular ferry service from Tarifa to Tangier in Morocco and the crossing only takes 30 minutes.
Other activities include golf at the Montenmedio Country Estate (just 5 km away), horseriding, kite-and windsurfing, surfing, whale watching near Tarifa, horse shows in Jerez and of course flamenco shows.
