Enfield Chace - studio and garden 30 mins from West End

Enfield Chace is the best kept secret in London. Half an hour from the centre, yet just minutes drive from farmland, this historic market town on the edge of the capital has wooed and won poets and princesses and is the jewel of the commuter belt. The Hermitage apartment is a ground floor garden studio in a leafy street half an hour by train from central London and the Eurostar link to the continent.

The Property

In the leafy heart of the Royal Chace, former playground of the Tudor and Stuart kings and princesses and the poets Keats and Lamb, this ground floor garden studio five minutes walk from the railway station with its regular half hour service to central London and the Eurostar link to the continent.

It is also a 10 minute drive, through farmland, to the M25 motorway for fast access to Stansted, Luton, Gatwick and Heathrow airports.

The underground Piccadilly Line to the West End and Heathrow from Oakwood Station, is but 10 minutes drive from the studio.

The flat itself is a little gem, updated and renovated in 2010.

Step into the light and airy open-plan living room, with its modern kitchen area, opening out to a dining area for up to 4, and a big comfy leather sofa facing the flat screen TV with DVD player. The sofa pulls out to become a very comfortable full-size double bed with a strong matress. Beyond the living room is the cosy bedroom, its 3/4 sized double bed, and tall wardrobe by the wide south facing window.

The newly decorated bathroom has retained some fine original features including "telephone" style chrome taps and shower head in the bath, behind the modern shower screen. The kitchen area is uncompromisingly well designed for foodies.

With a thrice-weekly market in the town at the bottom of the hill offering plenty of the freshest market garden produce, many farm shops a few minutes drive from the house and grocery stores close by, you will appreciate the black four ring ceramic cob, electric oven and microwave for preparing favourite dishes, and the under-counter fridge and freezers for storing fresh food.

And dinner is served, on the smart bevelled glass dining table by the window, or in summer, perhaps even outdoors in the garden.

Full-width french windows open out to the Hermitage's own private gardens that wrap around the studio. The lawn and flower beds and an outside dining area for breakfasting al fresco.

Location Description

***
Here, by the childhood playground of Queen Elizabeth I, where the 10-year-old Edward VI learnt he was now king of all England and where James I would hunt for deer and boar through the woodlands of the Royal Chace, many of the great estates remain to be discovered. Take time to discover another London, where bluebells flourish in Whitwebbs Wood and the cedar tree spreads its branches by the lake at Forty Hall. Where Sunday afternoon tea is still served in the West Lodge.

Stroll by the New River, amongst ducks, geese and swans, passing the homes of literary heroes Charles and Mary Lamb on Gentlemen's Row. The romantic poet John Keats and Hollywood thriller star Boris Karloff went to school here and Thomas Hardy was married in the Parish Church in the market place.

The market has been held every week for centuries, and the cobbled square and striped awnings continue to thrive just afew yards away from the former royal Palace Gardens - now a bustling shopping centre with Marks & Spencer, H&M, Waitrose, Next, and many of UK's best known retailers.

Enfield is home to many great traditional pubs and inns, where you maystill down a pint of ale in haunts of princes and highwayment, kings and tinkers.

With the Hermitage located so close to public transport links to central London., the studio proves a perfect base for enjoying London and England. The theatres, museums and shops of the West End just a tube or train ride away.

Windmill Hill (at the top of the road) has a cluster of varied options from one of the best traditional fish and chips restaurants in north London, to tapas bars and pub grub.

There are golf clubs within walking distance, swimming pools in Enfield and nearby Southgate, and plenty of equestrian centres for those who prefer to explore the countryside on horseback.
