Other local towns include Mirepoix, with its medieval bastide arcades, Foix the ancient seat of the Counts of Foix with its impressive castle and Mazeres, a pleasant medieval town. The fairy tale city of Carcassonne is not to be missed and likewise the spectacular Cathar mountaintop castle of Montsegur. The area is also rich in caves with prehistoric paintings and activities such as canoeing, rafting, walking and other outdoor sports.
