The Property
Abbaye Cottage Self Catering Accommodation
Abbaye Cottage lies at the heart of the medieval Abbey village of Fontevraud -final resting place of the Plantagenet Kings Henry II and Richard Coeur de Lion.
The detached cottage is set back from the main road and is accessed through a private locked gate and cobbled walkway. There is no parking on site but there is access for unloading/loading and easy parking can be found within a few hundred metres.
Village shops and restaurants are within easy walking distance and the entrance to the 35 acre Royale Abbaye is just across the road.
The quaint cottage is a centuries old farm building newly converted in 2005 and retains much of its original character with tuffeau stone walls and ancient oak beams complemented by high quality furniture and luxurious fittings. Until recently, Abbaye Cottage was our holiday home and has been well cared for. We now live just 30 minutes away but continue to manage the property to a high standard ourselves.
A central stone staircase divides the kitchen and lounge and gives access to the first floor, but has some high and uneven steps which may mean it is not suitable for the very young or elderly or infirm.
There is access to the garden from both the kitchen and lounge where you will find several seating areas (tiled or gravel) for outside dining, lawns for sun loungers and pretty lavender beds. The walled private garden provides a tranquil retreat for relaxing and enjoys the sun throughout the day. NEW for 2012 -Luxury Hot Tub

*** History & Heritage
This stretch of the Loire Valley is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. When choosing this area, the committee declared the Loire Valley as:
""""an exceptional cultural landscape, of great beauty, comprised of historic cities and villages, great architectural monuments - the Châteaux - and lands that have been cultivated and shaped by centuries of interaction between local populations and their physical environment, in particular the Loire itself"""".
In short, it is quintessentially French and a place where amongst the stunning Chateaux of the Loire, rural life continues much as it has done for centuries.
Fontevraud
The village of Fontevraud grew up around the Abbaye, founded in 1101 by Robert d'Arbrissel, and the historic buildings still cast their calm influence over the surrounding community.
The village is surrounded by beautiful countryside and you can walk or cycle directly from the Cottage onto woodland paths, and open fields set with sunflowers, corn and vines or head down to the Loire just 3 miles away. Shorter walks around the village itself explore the rich heritage and history of this beautiful place (leaflet guides available at the Tourist Office or at La Mairie).
The Abbaye itself was notable from an early stage as it was one of only a few sites in Europe where Monks and Nuns lived side by side.
Candes Saint Martin - officially classed as 'one of the most beautiful villages in France' the pretty streets sprawl along a hillside overlooking the confluence of the Rivers Vienne and Loire.
Montsoreau - adjoins Candes and also stretches along the Loire where at its centre lies the majestic Chateau of Montsoreau -the only Loire chateau to be set beside the river.
Les Chateaux
There are 5 stunning Chateaux within 20 minutes drive and a further 8 within an hour.
Family Venues and Attractions
The area boasts a wide range of venues to suit all ages and interests.

Food & Wine
Restaurants
We understand that everyone's tastes are different, but we always think it is good to share dining secrets. Sometimes it is not just the food that makes a place special but its location or ambience. We suggest some of our favourites (and those of our guests) here........
Food Markets
Few things can be more pleasurable and typical of French living than spending a few hours in a lively food street market. They can be found everywhere, and whilst some are better than others, all guarantee a friendly welcome and great produce. Learn more......
Wine and the Caves
The area is at the centre of Loire wine making and has four recognised wine regions Anjou, Saumur, Bourgeuil and Chinon. Excellent Sparkling Wines by the champagne method are also produced in abundance around Saumur (try Gratien & Meyer, Ackerman or Ladubay). In every direction you will pass through acres of vines and wine producers invite you to taste at every corner. This is fine, and if you enjoy wine, we recommend you simply try one or two. However, if you want to learn more about variations between the regions -and taste the differences- we recommend a visit to the Maison des Vins in the centre of Saumur (next to the Tourist Office facing the river by the bridge). Here you can explore the different wines with knowledgeable friendly staff. Once you have a clearer idea of what you really like then you can head off to the wine growers own cellar to meet the producers and try in more depth. The Maison des Vins staff can recommend the best cellars to visit.
For more information, visit..........http://www.vinsvaldeloire.fr/en_EN/
Useful Tip: If you want to buy wine, prices at the producers are the same as the supermarkets (or even less) and you can buy bottles or cases as required. If you want a more serious quantity to take home, look out for wineries that sell their wine in bulk ('en vrac') where you can buy 'bag in box' of 10 litres or more, or even take your own container. This can reduce the price of your wine by almost half!
Speciality Foods of the Region
fouee au bois -a small hand-made flat bread traditionally baked in a wood fired oven. May be eaten hot with pate, garlic butter or other savouries or sweet with jams. You can find them round the corner from the Cottage at the Boulangerie Cafe
Foie gras - pate of goose liver, found in many restaurants, supermarkets and direct from the farm
Mushrooms -there are several speciality mushroom growers in the region using the troglodyte caves, that were originally the source of stone for local buildings. Seek out
Pommes tapees -this speciality dessert involves drying fresh apples in a slow oven before they are beaten to a flat disc by a huge hammer blow. Delicious with sour cream or ice cream. Visit the local producer near Turquant on the Saumur road.
