The Property
Casa Marta is a 18th-century stone building with three floors spanning roughly 325 square feet each. It is located in the village of Pascoso (district of Pescaglia, province of Lucca,Tuscany), in the Apuane Park, 2321 feet above sea level.
In short, the house is made up of: 1 kitchen/living room + 2 bedrooms + 1 full bathroom + 1 powder room + 2 pantries. The house does not have a lawn, but there is space just outside the French doors leading out from the downstairs bedroom for a small table, sunshade and chairs. There are two entrances, the front door which takes you into the kitchen/living and the back door which leads to the downstairs bedroom, as the house is nestled on a hill, with three floors on one side and two on the other. The house is fully furnished with all new or antique pieces (Tuscan pieces from the 19th century); we have provided 2 televisions (1 satellite), radio and CD player. We have not yet installed a telephone (there is a public phone in town if you don't have a mobile), but telephone, computer, and internet access are available at our office (no more than 10 meters far from Casa Marta). A central heating system (gas) has also been installed. And, naturally, a working fireplace adorns the second floor, as how would a mountain house be complete without one!

*** Pascoso's finest asset, and the most important reason to travel there, is the nature in which it is literally immersed. However, it is not far from the ""cities of arts"" of Tuscany (Lucca,Pisa,Florence,Siena, etc., and beaches (Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio, which are among the most famous Italian beaches) are no more than 30 miles far. Furthermore, the house is situated under an hours drive from many of Italy’s finest and most picturesque golf courses, such as Golf Alisea - 32km -30 mins (5 holes promotional golf course), Montecatini Golf Club - 37 km -35 mins (18 hole golf course of natural beauty that has been built in the hilly countryside.Golfers are faced with many natural hazards such as lakes, streams, forests, and ditches which are all formed from the natural contours of the land), Club Golf Montelupo - 40 km -40 mins, Tirrenia Golf Club (9 hole), Cosmopolitan Golf & Country Club (18 hole) and Golf Club Fontevivo (18 hole).
Pascoso is really a hiker's paradise; many of the old mule paths are suitable for mountain bikes and horses, which you can rent in Pascoso. For some hikes you might want to drive a few short minutes to your point of departure, whereas for others, you can leave directly on foot from your front door. And clearly, for visitors with off-road vehicles, the opportunities are endless.
A section of the Turrite Stream is reserved for fishing. Trout abound, although, given the low levels of the water, they generally do not grow to be very large.
As you may have already imagined, the only sounds you'll hear in Pascoso are dogs barking and townsfolk chatting. Quiet reigns through the mountainside. The area is ideal for hiking, horseback riding (there are two barns where you can rent horses), and biking. In mid-August, Pascoso organizes a parade dedicated to the Madonna, in which a statue of the Holy Mother is carried high on a canopy throughout the town.

Pascoso, in the Tuscan province of Lucca, has just under 100 inhabitants and is so small, with such narrow stone roads, that cars enter town along a short strip of the main road only. Nearly all the houses in town are built in stone, including their rooftops, and the smooth stones of the streets were laid hundreds of years ago. Not far from village(a 10- to 15-minute walk or 5-minute drive) is a charming little church on a tiny piazza, shaded in the summer by age-old trees. However, Pascoso is not far from the “cities of arts” of Tuscany: Lucca, Pisa, Florence and Siena are 15, 30, 60, and 95 miles away. And Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio, which are among the most famous Italian beaches, are only 30 miles far (approximately 45 minutes of driving !).
The house is situated under an hours drive from many of Italy’s finest and most picturesque golf courses.
Golf Alisea - 32km -30 mins
The course was opened in summer 2001 as driving range before becoming a magnificent 5 holes promotional golf course. The openness of the course leads to a constant light breeze and the tricky water hazards will test golfers of all levels. It is located in the lovely country surroundings of Pietrasanta, which is the centre of art and culture.
Montecatini Golf Club - 37 km -35 mins
Situated in the Tuscan countryside, this 18 hole golf course of natural beauty that has been built in the hilly countryside. Golfers are faced with many natural hazards such as lakes, streams, forests, and ditches which are all formed from the natural contours of the land. This complex course is nearly 6.000 Meters, with natural water obstacles that lay a trap in at least five of eighteen holes. With each whole varying in difficulties, this course really does suit golfers of all levels of ability.
Club Golf Montelupo - 40 km -40 mins
The course was completed in Summer of 2000 and offers a variety of activities as well as an extremely competitive 3000 metre, nine hole golf course. The club offers also a variety of practice greens and spacious open fields for for pitch and put practise.
As well as the three mentioned above, the Tirrenia Golf Club (9 hole), The Cosmopolitan Golf & Country Club (18 hole) and Golf Club Fontevivo (18 hole) are all easily accessible and within 1 hours drive of the house.
The road to Pascoso is the same as that which heads from Lucca to Abetone and Garfagnana (State road [SS]12). However, once you have reached Diecimo (roughly 9 km, or 6 miles from Lucca), take the detour to the left (asphalt road) and follow that road about 18 km (11 miles) further to Pascoso. Once there, the road (again, in asphalt) continues for another 8 to 10 km (5 to 6 miles), and ends at the foot of Mount Matanna (4,000 feet above sea level) where you will find breathtaking fields and a restaurant.
Traffic is almost unheard of in Pascoso. There are no nightclubs, bars, or other attractions of mass tourism. However, you will find that all the essential services are provided by the village's one store, which is run by a local family and sells everything to meet your daily needs, from fruits and vegetables, meat and bread to laundry detergent.
Next door to the store, the family runs an old style trattoria so welcoming in its genuine Tuscan hospitality, you’ll feel like a guest in their home. The decor, complete with wooden benches, checkered tablecloths, and flasks of Tuscan wine on each table, adds to its charm. The dishes served are exclusively those typical of the region—wild game, delicious homemade pasta ("tordelli" and "maccheroni"), Tuscan wines and cheeses and last, but certainly not least, homemade cakes and pies.
By car, you can also reach more refined, fine dining restaurants in the surrounding area. At Pescaglia (5 Km far) there is a post office open all year round and, just a few kilometers from Pascoso, there are towns with more stores.
