*** The Dordogne Region offers the best in a French vacation: history (from Pre, to Roman, Medieval to present), 1001 castles, medieval villages, beautiful vistas, quiet country roads, and world-renowned cuisine and wine. Our central location is perfect to explore the incredible variety of the Perigord.
Within walking distance is the spectacular 17th c castle, The Chateau de Hautefort! A magnificent chateau perched upon a hilltop, that is so spectacular it has been used as a film location!
Visit the vineyards which produce the world famous Bordeaux wines, visit several old fortified villages (bastides), experience breathtaking views of Rocamadour sitting precariously on cliff sides, and be awe stricken with the natural wonders of the Padirac Chasm. Visit the medieval villages of Sarlat, and Perigueux. For the active, canoe down the Dordogne River past Castles and villages built into the rock face (La Roque-Gageac) For the historian, a visit to the caves of Lascaux II and Les Eyzies (the capital of prehistory) may be a highlight. And for the kids, castles filled with medieval armaments to bring alive the stories of knights in shining armor. For others it will be the gourmet cuisine and the lovely accommodation.
You will experience gastronomic specialties on a daily basis. Perigord boasts a menu known throughout France: cepes (mushrooms), truffles, walnut liqueur, cabecou (regional goat cheese), roast duck (canard) and garlic soup. To satisfy a true epicurean taste, sample a truffle omelet accompanied by local wine, or enjoy the region’s best foie gras on fresh bread. They have a saying in Paris: ""ahh, you'll eat well in the Perigord!"", and it's true!
The Dordogne offers something for everyone in the family!

The surrounding countryside is rolling hills, with a mix of woodland and pasture, with superb views over the valley. The single track lane leading to the hamlet is a secondary route, thus there is almost no passing traffic. You can walk 1km to the local supermarket, an intermarche, that has a bakery, and butcher on site. As well as an international foods section, a biologic health section, a fish stand, and many other options. The villages of St Agnan and Hautefort have everything: banks, shops, cafes and restaurants. There are good restaurants in the villages and towns around us. We are not in the crowded “tourist” areas, so they are still very “French”, with their set menus of traditional regional cuisine. The Dordogne is famous for being a gastronomic paradise with wines to complement the cuisine. The gourmet specialties from this region are truffles, foie gras, confit de canard and wine from Bergerac and Bordeaux. There are also some very good vegetarian options available.
Fresh produce can be purchased at the local farmers markets that happen almost everyday of the week somewhere nearby! And in the Summer there are local night markets offering food, drinks, live music, dancing, and a nice ambiance!
The area is unspoilt with very little traffic, surrounded by farms and mother nature. The area abounds in natural lakes, with beaches, swimming and water sports activities. There are the world famous horse stables at Arnac-Pompadour.The numerous rivers that traverse the Dordogne offer spectacular scenery, cliff top villages and water sports activities including numerous canoeing centres. The Property is ideally located to explore the Region’s rich cultural history (prehistoric cave paintings, medieval castles and many excellent museums, including Les Eyzies, Limoges and Perigueux).
The very varied countryside provides a scenic background to each season: Summer – Swimming and sunbathing at the nearby lakes and beaches, or canoeing down one of the numerous rivers. Autumn – Mushroom hunting and exploring. Walnut harvesting Winter - Walking and Winter activities. Wood Burner. Spring - Spring flowers, truffles and local specialities.
