The Property
The house provides the perfect restful holiday with many different places to sunbathe or read in the large garden with different views of the mountains, to the east the Majella Mountain and west the Apennines. It is on the edge of the village of Pacentro and a short walk takes you up to the bustle of the main piazza with all the shops you need for day to day living and several restaurants. Apart from grocer shops Pacentro has a bank, pharmacy and bakery, with beautiful fresh bread and cakes. The restaurants are all excellent and open all years round as people often come up from Sulmona and the valley area to eat in Pacentro.
The house is arranged on three floors over two terraces. The kitchen is on the lowest floor with convenient eating outside the kitchen door on the lower terrace. There is also a bathroom on the lowest floor. The middle floor is given over completely to a large barrel vaulted sitting room which is cool in the summer due to the thickness of the bricks and which also seem to retain their heat to keep warm in the cooler months. The upper terrace is reached from the living room. There is an open plan staircase to the two bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs.
The garden is south facing and is mostly laid to grass except for the two terraces. There are olive trees and two enormous fig trees and a large cave where we keep the outside furniture.
The property is entered by a locked gate down steps to the front door. There is parking on the church forecourt next to the house but the roads in the village are quite narrow. We usually park on a nearby wider road and walk the 90 metres to the house.
In the heat of the summer our ravine is cooler than the centre of the village

***
The village of Pacentro is situated on the side of the Peligna valley. It is reached by a winding road from the valley floor. The village is perched on a ridge with beautiful views on either side.
Pacentro is set within the Majella National Park and you can walk straight out onto the marked paths. The information office for The Majella National Park is in Pacentro, where you can also hire bikes to cycle up into the Majella or down to the local swimming pool.
The village is lively all year round. You can easily spend happy days in bars and restaurants at any time of year. Walk up in the morning, through the narrow streets, to Piazza Umberto I for your morning coffee, and to get your freshly baked bread from the baker. Also buy one of their delicious cakes. After an excellent meal in one of Pacentro’s many restaurants, walking back through the silent ancient village to our house is quite unique.
At the end of July we have the Festa di Ritorno (to celebrate the lives of those that emigrated), the medieval reenactments in August, and the Corsa degli Zingari on the first weekend in September. At this time the village is really quite busy especially at night with a constant round of fairs, musical events, and stalls in the piazzas. However, the area around our house is always quite except for the Corsa degli Zingari which culminates in the church of Madonna di Loreto next to our house.
The nearby town of Sulmona has a bustling market filling a whole Piazza twice a week. There are also several interesting museums in the town and lovely churches.
