About Central Rome
Rome lies on the river Tiber with its centre located within fortified walls built by the Roman Emperor Aurelian between 270-275AD. The walls which are approximately 19km in length, encircle the city centre where most of Rome's major tourist attractions can be found. Having been the home of the Emperor during the Roman Empire, Rome is now the capital of Italy and seat of the government and is full of history and many magnificent buildings. It is also the location of Vatican city, an independent state and the headquarters of the Catholic church. Apart from its many historic monuments and buildings it is also very rich in theatres, museums, art galleries and restaurants. The distance between tourist attractions is not that great and it is possible, although tiring, to travel by foot, however most people use the public transport system in the form of bus, tram and metro.
When travelling on public transport you must remember to buy a ticket first. These are available from bars and news venders. When entering a bus you must stamp you own ticket using the machines available. Regular inpections ensure most tickets are stamped and failure to do so can result in a fine.
You won't be short of things to do and see in Rome.
Among the major attractions are:
The Colosseum a huge Amphitheatre built by the Romans as a place of entertainment and where bloody battles were fought often to the death.
The Vatican with its gardens, St Peters Square and Basilica, and museum including the Sistine Chapel painted by Michelangelo.
The Spanish Steps which lead up to the Trinita dei Monti church on top of Pinco hill.
The Pantheon A Roman temple built between 118- 125 AD.
City apartments and penthouses are the most common types of places to stay in Rome - look out for any with amazing views of the city. If you are travelling with family, the option of a country villa with pool on the outskirts of the city may be a good alternative, allowing easy access to the centre but with the added attraction of being able to cool the children down in a more peaceful environment! Bed and breakfast rooms offer a great way for the independent tourist to see Rome on a short stay or for a longer, more Italian experience.
Airports. The main international airport serving Rome is Liumicino (Leonardo da Vinci) Airport. The smaller Ciampino Airport is used mainly by charter and low cost airlines serving European destinations.
Rome can also be reached by train from international destinations such as Paris, Geneva, Munich and Vienna.
