About Lisbon
The largest city in Portugal and its capital, Lisbon is built over seven rolling hills on the north bank of the Tagus estury. Its attraction is its mix of old and new, its climate and its coastal location. Following the great earthquake of 1755 which destroyed over half the city, its centre (Baixa District) was rebuilt in a modern grid like system with wide avenues and grand Squares with buildings of Neo Classical architecture. The Alfama district of windy narrow cobbled streets and small squares survived the quake and provides a taste of its medieval past. Although inhabited by the Romans, the ambience of Alfama is mainly influenced by the occupation of the Moors between the 8th and 12th century when they built the maze of narrow streets as a form of defence. The Belem district represents the age of discovery with monuments and buildings commemorating the great Portugues discoverers of the 15th- 17th centuries such as Magellan and Vasco do Gama. The Parque das Naes district celebrates architecture from the 20th century, a lot of which was created for Lisbon's hosting of Expo 98 such as the Vasco do Gama bridge, the longest road bridge in Europe. The Bairro Alto & Chiado districts provide the venue for Lisbon nightlife, culture and shopping, the former with its bars, restaurants and arty shops and the Childao district with its theatres and up market designers shops.
Having one of the mildest climates in Europe makes Lisbon a year round place to stay. In summer temperatures can reach as high as 40c however the cooling breezes of the Atlantic generally help keep it bearable and if not you can always head for one of Lisbon's beaches which are only a short distance from the city. In winter it can bet be wet but the influence of the Gulf stream keeps the temperatures up to a pleasant level.
