About Carcassonne
Carcassonne comprises two towns on either side of the river Aude - a mediaeval walled city known as La Cite Medieval and a new town of 4500 inhabitants. The double walls of the old city stretch nearly 2km Inside the city has a mediaeval feel with its cobbled stone streets, and squares with a myriad of cafes and souvenir shops. Exploring the entire city will take a full day. The new town, the Bastide Saint Louis, is clean and modern with many fountains, public squares and gardens planted with Plane trees. The town is an important wine market supporting the surrounding vineyards and serviced by its own port on the Canal du Midi.
